Guilty as charged...at least as far as not providing enough facts. My argument isn't cruise ships versus "other activities in the area." Its the fact that as a form of tourism, it is a particularly impactful one. True, not enough facts here and I've been doing some digging for a future post. From what I've seen so far, it appears cruise lines are addressing the issues of pollution, but the jury is still out on whether this is enough. (see http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/mar2004/2004-03-16-03.asp)
But as I alluded, some of the heaviest impacts are upon the economies where ships dock. This article from Gulf News (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/07/10/08/10158728.html) does a pretty good job summarizing some of these impacts. The good news is cruisers have some control over this social impact by choosing where to spend their money. More to come...

You didn't convince me. Yes, it is ridiculous how much food is on the ship and even more ridiculous how the towns have turned into tourist traps, hiding their true beauty. But, you never convinced me why the cruise ships are to blame. "I have to wonder what impact the parade of cruise ships into these waters has on the local ecosystem". How about some facts? How about you compare the ships to the other activities in the area? Fishing? Oil production? Logging? I sincerely think they have a larger impact than these ships. Check out the cruise sites environmental websites, http://www.princess.com/legal/environmental_policy/index.html. They operate with nearly zero impact to the water and the towns. Princess even powers their ships from shore power at many ports in an effort to save fuel. I think I could make an even stronger case: How cruise ships allow thousands of people to experience and better appreciate nature in Alaska. Surely this new found appreciation makes some percentage of these vacationers change their ways.

Don't get me wrong. Continue the good fight. Just realize that your article didn't do a very good job of providing facts and that perhaps you chose the wrong subject (cruise ships) to focus on.
